Where did you grow up?
Palmgrove, Lagos.
Why did you become an artist?
I’m naturally drawn to the act of drawing and painting. I find joy and fulfillment in the process of creating art, exploring different techniques and honing my skills. The act of putting brush to canvas or pencil to paper is a deeply satisfying and rewarding experience for them. I’m drawn to the creative process as a means of expressing my thoughts, emotions and perspectives. Drawing and painting is a powerful medium for storytelling which is one of the compelling reason for me becoming an artist. I use my works to tell narrative, explore social issues, depict personal experiences and capturing the beauty of the world around me.
How would you describe your own style?
My artistic style is a fusion of realism and surrealism. I strive to capture my subjects, paying close attention to proportion, lighting, texture and other visual elements. I aims to depict subjects with a high level of accuracy and detail, often resembling the appearance of the real world. By merging realism and surrealism in my artistic style I have the opportunity to create captivating and thought provoking works. I employ technical skills and attention to detail from realism to anchor my subjects in recognizable forms while incorporating surreal elements to introduce a sense of mystery or unexpected narratives.
What expectations were placed on you when you were a child?
I grew up in a country where a female child exploring the world of art is seen as peculiar or unusual. Growing up as a child, I had the support of my parents although my father want me to be a nurse, it took him awhile before he gave his consent. They encouraged me to pursue and develop my artistic skills.

An Actor
Who is your favourite artist of all time and what is your favourite artwork of all time?
Michelangelo is my favourite artist. I admire him as a sculptor, architect and a painter My favourite artworks are Michelangelo drawings. Some are completed, some as studies for his larger works such as the frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. Drawings like head of Cleopatra, portrait of Andrea Quartesi, study for a Pieta, study for the drapery of the Erythraean. Many of these drawings provide a snapshot of the thought process of Michaelangelo.
Which person outside art do you admire? And for what?
Michelle Obama. She has been an inspiration for me. She embodies resilence, intelligence and grace. I admire her strength, confidence and ability to overcome challenges while maintaining a positive outlook. Her emphasis on education, self-confidence and breaking down barriers has resonate with me as l see her as a symbol of female empowerment.
What advice would you give to your younger self? (16-18 years old)
Follow your passion. Pursue art because you genuinely love it. Like any skill, art require practice. Dedicate time to draw and paint. Do not be afraid to embrace experimentation. Try new, mediums or style. Engage with fellow artists, learning from them can be invaluable in your artistic growth. And lastly, develop your own voice, while learning from others is important, strive to develop your own artistic voice.
What do you like about the culture you grew up in?
Growing up in Lagos, l appreciate various vibrant and diverse culture in the city. Lagos is a melting pot of diverse cultures, languages and ethnicity. This diversity offers opportunities for cultural exchanges learning and a broader perspective on the world. The Art and Literature culture in Lagos fosters a vibrant culture environment and creativity. Lagos has a thriving art scene with numerous galleries exhibitions and cultural centres showcasing works of local artists and photographers. Lagos is known for its rich music scene and vibrant dance culture. Afrobeats, Highlife, juju and contemporary Nigerian pop music. The energetic beats infectious rhythms and lively dance moves are deeply ingrained in Lagos’s culture and provide a source of joy and entertainment for many.

If you had to live in a different African city, not in the country where you were born or raised, which city would you pick and why?
Cape Town. I love the breathtaking natural views of the city. The iconic table mountain, the stunning coastlines, the deep historical and cultural heritage and the vibrant arts and entertainment scene.
What message would you want artists to hear right now?
Your art matters. In a world that can sometimes feel chaotic your creative expression has the power to inspire heal and connect. Embrace the challenges and uncertainties that come with being an artist. Keep believing in yourself stay resilient and continue to inspire everyone through your art.
